AC Learning Design Studios' mobile George Washington Carver InVenTures Institute for STEAM has a partnership with the Lakeland Community + STEAM Center (LCSC) in Baltimore, Maryland. We create and develop InVenTures for LCSC's Green Lions Club; an after school activity for students at the Lakeland Elementary-Middle School in Baltimore.
The purpose of the Club is to help members gain knowledge, understanding and skills that enables them to practice activities which are sustainable and eco-friendly to Earth's environment.
Activities, referred to as InVenTures, of the Club are designed to increase members' education skills in the integration of science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM).
Our InVenTures are also designed to engage Club members in exploration, investigation and the invention or creation of either a project o ar product.
Learn phenology – the science about how the seasons affect plants and animals (including humans).
Visit the mighty oak tree each week. Use your eyes to observe any changes such as the colors of the leaves each week. Create a Green Lions STEAM Journal to write your observations. Photograph your leaf observations.
Observe the Mighty Oak's trunk. What does the bark look like? What does the bark feel like? Write your observations in your STEAM Journal.
The Mighty Oak Tree has a key role in the environment. It provides food and shelter to many different animals. Observe: what animals (birds, mammals and/or insects) do you see and/or hear around the Mighty Oak Tree?
Write your observations in your STEAM Journal.
The Mighty Oak Tree produces a fruit called acorn nuts. Look at the ground around the tree. Can you find any acorn nuts? If so, how many can you find?
Observe the acorn nuts. What do they look like? What do they feel like?
Write your observations in your STEAM Journal. Draw pictures of the acorn nuts. Collect 1 or 2 acorn nuts.
Why do you think acorn nuts are fruits?
Observe the leaves of the Mighty Oak Tree> What shape are the leaves Draw pictures of the leaves. How are the green leaves different from the leaves of a another color? How are they alike?
Can you find some leaves that are dry or have been on the ground for a long time? What do they look like What do they feel like?
Write a story or stories that tell how you feel about the Mighty Oak Tree.
What did you discover about the Mighty Oak Tree?
Describe/tell at least five (5) things you learned about the Mighty Oak Tree.
GWC DISCO™ Environmental Awareness
This phenology (seasonal change impacts) lesson is ongoing. Here students are simulating biologists to discover and investigate some of the impacts Spring season has on some campus trees.
Use this great video to encourage discussions with and among Green Lions Club members.
You are encouraged to use the Planning Portal to share your ideas, discuss, inquire and develop lessons and activities for sessions of the Green Lions Club.
