In 1985, Maryland voters approved a voting rights reform amendment to the State constitution. The amendment empowered African–Americans and other disenfranchised citizens in the State with the right and capacity to elect government representatives from their own communities.
A 20-ton blue granite monument in Dorchester County has been erected that commemorates ten men who fought for and achieved voter reform rights in 1985. The amendment changed the state from an at-large voting system to a district voting system which subsequently increased minority representation and participation inMaryland's government. Located, near the highway, on private property at 7014 East New Market Elwood Road in Hurlock, Maryland; the monument is the only one of its kind in the state and likely the country, dedicated to voter equity.
